Associated Press-"Several European countries have restricted gun laws in the wake of school massacres, gang violence and other gun-related crimes:
Finland announced plans Wednesday to impose stricter restrictions on firearms, including raising the minimum age for handgun ownership from 15 to 20. The proposal was prompted by two school massacres within a year in which lone gunmen opened fire on classmates and teachers.
Germany, where a gunman killed at least 11 people Wednesday, raised the legal age for owning recreational firearms from 18 to 21 following a 2002 shooting in Erfurt that killed 16 people, including 12 teachers."
Has it ever occurred to any of these freedom-munching powers in Europe that more of the same is not the solution? Unfortunately, this disastrous slew of new legislation is motivated by a myth which is now firmly entrenched in European academia. Namely, that guns cause violence. One need only look at the violent crime statistics for Western European nations as compared with the United States. The numbers are staggering! According to the UK's Home Office Crime Report, the United Kingdom suffers from a monstrous violent crime rate of 4,100 per 100,000 citizens compared with just 475 out of 100,000 in the United States. Not coincidentally, the UK has some of the most draconian gun laws known to man.
Why exactly is it that lawmakers in Europe and elsewhere are so convinced that stripping the citizenry of its firearms will prevent criminals from doing what they do best? Especially in the wake of a shooting at a SCHOOL (incidentally, one of the favorite haunts for gun-murderers)? If anything, this proves only that killers are cowards. They go for unarmed targets--and like terrorists, they can't be "bought, bullied or reasoned with." Some men, as Alfred would say, just need to be shot.
So why not loosen up the gun laws in Europe and encourage an America-esque culture of self-defense? The sooner Germany, France and Great Britain realize that this is the ultimate solution to violent crime, the sooner they can hault their spiral toward another Dark Age.
